Tips for Good Vision

Overview

The following tips can help you keep your eyes healthy and your vision as clear as possible.

  • Get routine eye exams from an eye doctor. Tell your doctor if you have a family history of eye problems. See your doctor right away if you have problems with your eyes or vision.
  • Keep your eyeglass or contact lens prescription up to date. Wear your eyeglasses or contact lenses as prescribed.
  • If you wear contact lenses, carefully follow the cleaning instructions. Don't sleep with them in unless your doctor says it's okay. Most types are not safe to wear while you sleep.
  • Take care of dry eyes. Use artificial tears. Try to blink often if you spend a lot of time watching screens.
  • Rest your eyes often when you use screens. Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. If you are using a laptop or computer, try to keep your screen more than 20 inches away.
  • Protect your eyes from injury. Wear goggles or protective eyeglasses if your work or hobbies can hurt your eyes.
  • Wear sunglasses when you are in the sun. Choose ones that block UV rays.
  • If you wear eye makeup, replace it every three months. Don't share eye makeup.
  • Take care of health problems that may harm your vision. These include diabetes and high blood pressure.
  • Don't smoke, vape, or use tobacco or nicotine products. Talk to your doctor if you need help quitting.
  • Follow a healthy lifestyle. Try to be active and eat healthy foods, like fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains.
